Alexander confirms Scunthorpe's interest in Preston and Oldham striker Doyle

It's three days since we revealed speculation linking the Iron to Eoin Doyle, and Graham Alexander has now confirmed that he is player they are tracking ahead of a January swoop.

Doyle, who has enjoyed a fruitful loan spell at Oldham Athletic from Preston North End, looks set to leave Deepdale permanently in January - but will be a prime target for many League One clubs, if the price is right.

The Irishman is the kind of striker many Iron fans would want the club to be linked with, and our chances of luring him to Glanford Park have taken a boost, after Alexander's admission of his admiration for the 29-year-old.

"We have looked at Eoin but I am guessing every manager in League One and the Championship have looked at him," the Iron boss told the Scunthorpe Telegraph.

"We know of him and his talent is undoubted. However, he is someone else’s player so it is difficult to talk about him.

"He is a player out on loan at the moment and has done exceptionally well so I am guessing a lot of clubs will be interested in a player of that type."

It appears United have players on their hands that are attracting interest from elsewhere, too, after Alexander admitted to having already had enquiries ahead of the January transfer window.

"We have had phone calls for players both in the team regularly and those that have not been in the team regularly," he mentioned.

"You can identify players who can improve us but you have to be aware you can lose players as well.

"Every player at our level has a price and you have to be ready for any action like that.

"It is a badge of honour when people are phoning you about your players and asking for their availability because it means you are doing something right and have got good players on your hands.

"If the phone wasn’t ringing, I’d be a little bit disturbed about that.

"We try to do the business in the right way and not be disrespectful to other clubs and players." he concluded.
