Scunthorpe show interest in Oldham's on-loan Preston striker Doyle

The Iron are being widely reported as having taken a heavy interest in securing the signature of Oldham Athletic's on-loan hero, Eoin Doyle.

The Irish striker has endured a superb first half of the season, scoring 14 goals in 21 appearances for Oldham.

His latest goal - a late equaliser at Doncaster on Saturday - sealed an important point for his side, as they continue to climb the League One table.

The Latics had started the season poorly under John Sheridan, but his ultimate departure, and the impressive appointment of Richie Wellens, has seen the club rise to mid-table.

The first murmur of the Iron's interest came from the ever reliable (when it comes to Scunny rumours) Alan Nixon, when he tweeted:

"@reluctantnicko: Scunthorpe making the biggest bid for Eoin Doyle at Preston so far. Having a go. Bit in paper."

The Sun Sport journalist went on to even mention a fee in the region of £300,000 was being offered by United.

Oldham are covered by local journalist's at Manchester Evening News, and the rumour has now been reported there, too.

The M.E.N claim: "It was hoped that Doyle may remain at Boundary Park, especially after his parent club Preston agreed a deal to sign Motherwell striker Louis Moult last week.

"Oldham face stiff competition though, with Scunthorpe United believed to have offered Preston £300,000 to sign the striker next month.

"Potentially losing Doyle would be a big blow for Latics, and manager Richie Wellens made it clear just how vital the forward's late goal against Doncaster was."

There's no doubting that a lack of goals from Scunthorpe's current strike force has left fans and management at the club frustrated, and this signing could be huge, as Graham Alexander looks to go one step further than last season, and secure promotion from League One.

One thing that seems to be set in stone, is that should the Iron sign Doyle, it would surely mark the end for Paddy Madden.
A lack of goals and confidence in front of goal has meant the Irishman has had fans on his back, and a new start may be what he and the club are looking for from January onwards.

We will bring you more on this, if, and when there are any updates.
