YOUR VIEW: 'McArdle as Captain a wise choice' - Ryan Middleton on Scunthorpe's start

What do you make to the start of the season for the Iron? I personally think it has been a good start for the lads.

Four wins, three draws, one defeat, nine goals, three conceded and five clean sheets from the first eight games of the season; Not a bad return, it has to be said.

Attacking wise, it hasn't all gone swimmingly for the Iron, in contrast to the defence, who have hardly put a foot wrong so far this campaign.

The combination of Rory McArdle and Murray Wallace is working an absolute treat so far against other League One sides, and teams are struggling to break the two down.

It is also worth mentioning the Iron's shot stopper Matt Gilks, who has been phenomenal in the opening month, making some crucial saves at key times in almost every game.

I feel like the whole back line is relishing having Gilks in goal. Having a good goalkeeper between the sticks inspires any back line, no matter what level in football.

He is just what our talented back line needed to keep them in shape and focused at important stages of a game.

So far this season, the whole team has shown composure, energy and togetherness - which any side needs to be successful.

What is so special about the team this year, compared to any other year, is the balance between the players playing alongside each other.

Not only do McArdle and Wallace have such a unique understanding of one another - so do Funso Ojo and Neal Bishop in the centre of the park.

Although I loved having Bishop and Stephen Dawson in the middle last season, I always felt like they were very similar, perhaps too alike. Both were both ball winning midfielders - and they did that side of the game extremely well.

Ojo brings more energy to the middle of the park, and is one of the most composed central midfielder's I have seen at the club for some time.

On the subject of partnerships, I also think the height and presence of Lee Novak will work well with the pace and desire of Paddy Madden in the centre forward role.

As the season progresses and Novak's fitness continues to improve, that could be a serious strike force for the league.

Both have scored plenty of goals throughout their career, and I expect them to score plenty more at Scunthorpe United, too.

What is great about the team at the moment is the competition for places. At least two players can play in each position, which shows the strength in depth we currently have.

That will motivate the starting 11 each week - as one poor performance could cost them their place in the team.

The Iron currently have the joint best defensive record in the division alongside Wigan; conceding three goals in eight games.

The defence is the most important part of any football team. If you aren't conceding goals, you aren't losing football games.

You can score loads of goals in a game and still lose, whereas if you keep a clean sheet, it's impossible to be defeated.

In addition, having McArdle as the Captain seems to have turned out to be a wise choice for United, as the whole team seem to be relishing having him as the skipper in the team.

Right through the spine of the team, we have plenty of experience.

Gilks in goal, McArdle in central defence, Bishop in central midfield and Novak in the centre forward position.

Having this kind of spine through the team enables all the other players to thrive, which is exactly what they are showing and doing out on the pitch at the moment - and long may it continue.
