INJURY UPDATE: Margetts suffers knee injury; Clarke's absence could open the door for another right back

Graham Alexander has confirmed that Jonny Margetts suffered a knee injury in training last week, which will see him miss at least 3-4 weeks of the season.

Kevin van Veen is another player who will miss Tuesday's trip to Middlesbrough in the Carabao Cup second round.

The Iron manager did also confirm that Jordan Clarke, who was due to return to training on Monday, wasn't quite ready, but could be back on Thursday.

Margetts featured in a handful of pre-season games for United, as he looked to try and edge his way into the first team fold after a disappointing first year at the club.

In total, Margetts has only appeared for the Iron five times in all competitions since his switch from Lincoln in August 2016.

His only goal for the club came against Shrewsbury in the Checkatrade Trophy in October 2016, before he finished the season on loan at his former-club after a move to Crewe fell through in January.

The injury will be a huge blow for Margetts who scored in a pre-season game at North Ferriby United this summer.

"Jonathon has got a knee injury at the moment that he sustained in training," Alexander said.

"We think he’ll be out for three-to-four weeks. Hopefully we can add him back to the numbers as soon as possible."

Clarke will be another absentee tomorrow night after missing the last two league games, although Levi Sutton's form at right back has meant the injury has been less of a disaster than it could have been.

On Clarke's recovery, Alexander said: "We were hoping he’d train with us on Monday but that’s not the case.

"He won’t be training on Tuesday with there being the game, but if we can get him back on Thursday that will be a bonus."

The right back has been injury prone during his time at the club, and the risk of another season in and out of the team - having lost Scott Wiseman as back-up from last season - could push Alexander into the market for another player who can fill that position.

Luke Williams, Kyle Wootton and Kevin van Veen are the other players to miss out. Van Veen suffered an injury in the first half on Saturday, and Alexander says he is unaware of the extent of the injury yet.

"We only have Kevin missing from Saturday, so we’ll probably go with the 18-man squad we have left fit, and make any changes to the team that we feel will benefit them.

"I’ve not seen the physios yet but will get the report (on Kevin) later on Monday.

"The squad won’t change but we have a fit group of players, we’re only into the fifth game of the season, there’s plenty of energy left in the boys’ legs and I’m looking forward to seeing them compete against a top quality opposition."
